Liverpool Spa Days: Which Spa Hotels Take Non-Guests
By the Carefree Retreat team
Updated 2026
The thing nobody tells you about spa hotels in Liverpool city centre is that the good thermal suites are not open to walk-ins, and at the biggest of them the middle of the day is reserved for people who have booked a treatment. Turn up at two o’clock on a Saturday hoping to buy two hours in the hydrotherapy pool and you will be turned away. Book properly and Liverpool has one of the better spa line-ups of any northern city, including a subterranean spa under a Victorian dock warehouse and a Georgian Quarter thermal journey with an outdoor pool.
This guide covers the venues worth booking, what each one actually has, and the access rules that decide whether you can get in at all.
Maya Blue Wellness at the Titanic Hotel: the serious one
If you want the full thermal experience, Maya Blue Wellness at the Titanic Hotel is the flagship. It sits underground at Stanley Dock, in the brick arches beneath the old warehouse, and the setting does most of the work: low vaulted ceilings, dim light and a hydrotherapy pool where a loading bay used to be.
The spa has a thermal suite, ten treatment rooms running an ESPA menu, luxury foot baths, an experience shower, a health and fitness centre, and a relaxation area with beds, a bean bag section and a tea garden. It is open every day from 8am to 8pm and is strictly over 18s.
The access rules are the part to read twice, because they are unusual and they are published on the hotel’s own thermal suite page:
- Thermal suite sessions are capped at two hours.
- Between 10am and 5pm, thermal access is restricted to guests who have booked a treatment. That is the window most people assume is the free-for-all.
- Hotel residents get their own slots, 8am to 10am and 6pm to 8pm, and pre-booking is essential.
- Non-residents are admitted strictly by appointment, with last access between 5pm and 7pm.
- Thermal access is not included with an express treatment, and is not advised during pregnancy.
- You get a locker, towel and robe. You do not get footwear. Bring your own flip flops or sliders.
That last point catches people out constantly, because most British spas hand you slippers at the desk. Our guide on what to wear to a spa day covers the rest of the packing.
The Spa at Hope Street Hotel: the best thermal journey in the city
In the Georgian Quarter, the spa at Hope Street Hotel runs what it calls a thermal journey, and the facility list is the strongest in central Liverpool:
- A 15-metre indoor pool with water blades and underwater music.
- An outdoor heated vitality pool in the courtyard, with bubbles and jets. Genuinely rare in a city-centre hotel and the reason to book here in cold weather.
- A Himalayan salt sauna.
- A separate herbal sauna.
- An aroma steam room infused with eucalyptus.
- A tepidarium with infra-red heated marble beds.
- A serenity lounge and relaxation spaces.
The spa is open every day from 8am to 8pm, and the gym runs 24 hours for residents. Robes, towels and slippers are all provided; you bring swimwear.
The packages are structured by time of day rather than by facility, which makes it easy to match one to your plans. There is a morning slot, an evening slot with a mezze board, a twilight session from 5pm, a Rasul mud chamber package, and a mummy-to-be version with a non-alcoholic alternative. Non-residents can book packages, treatments and classes; the cheaper thermal-only rate is a residents’ benefit. If the evening version appeals, see our guide to twilight and evening spa packages.
The Municipal Thermae Spa: the five-star option
The Municipal Hotel & Spa opened in the old Municipal Buildings on Dale Street after a long restoration and is Liverpool’s five-star address. Its Municipal Thermae Spa is smaller than the two above but finished to a higher standard, with a 16-metre indoor heated pool, sauna, steam room and relaxation room, and four treatment rooms including a dual suite for couples. Treatments run on Elemis and tRiBe517 products.
Two practical rules: the pool is over 18s only, and the spa takes card only, no cash. Spa and pool access is chargeable and has to be booked.
This is the pick when the building is part of the appeal, or when you want a couples spa day in a dual treatment room rather than a big thermal circuit.
Formby Hall: the one to drive to
Twenty minutes up the coast, Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa is the nearest thing to a countryside spa resort, sitting in parkland minutes from the dunes. Its thermal areas include a heated 20-metre indoor pool and jacuzzi, a steam room, a Himalayan salt sauna, an ice fountain and experience showers, and relaxation lounges with heated benches. The thermal facilities come as part of spa day packages and spa breaks rather than being sold separately.
It suits a group, a longer day, or a spa break with a walk on Formby beach attached. Over the water on the Wirral, Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa is the other out-of-town option people from Liverpool tend to book; check the current facility list with the hotel directly before you commit, as its thermal areas have changed over the years.
The rest of the Liverpool spa hotels
Liverpool’s official tourist board lists its spa hotels as the Municipal, Formby Hall, the Titanic, Hope Street and the Radisson Blu. The Radisson on Old Hall Street runs a health club rather than a destination spa, with a pool, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms, which makes it a reasonable choice for a swim-and-massage afternoon rather than a thermal circuit.
Beyond those, several city-centre hotels have leisure clubs that sell spa afternoons: pool, sauna, steam room and a treatment, usually with afternoon tea attached. They are the right call for a birthday group on a budget and the wrong call if you came for the thermal experience. For the tea-and-treatment format specifically, see spa and afternoon tea.
Choosing between Liverpool spa days
- You want a proper thermal circuit. Hope Street, for the outdoor vitality pool and the two saunas, or Maya Blue for the setting.
- You want the best treatment rooms. The Municipal, or Maya Blue’s ESPA menu across ten rooms.
- You are not staying over and want daytime access. Hope Street or the Municipal. At Maya Blue, daytime means booking a treatment.
- You want an evening. Hope Street’s twilight package, or Maya Blue’s late non-resident slot.
- You have a car and a full day. Formby Hall.
- You are making a night of it. All of the above are hotels, so a spa night with an overnight stay is usually better value than a day rate plus a separate room.
Rates and package contents change often and the good slots go weeks ahead, especially Friday and Saturday, so book direct and check what is included rather than working from a comparison page. Our spa day value calculator helps compare what you are actually getting for the money, and spa hotels in the North West widens the search if nothing in Liverpool has availability.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use a Liverpool hotel spa if you are not staying there? Yes, at most of them, but on their terms. Hope Street and the Municipal both sell spa packages and treatments to non-residents. Maya Blue at the Titanic admits non-residents strictly by appointment with last access between 5pm and 7pm, and reserves 10am to 5pm thermal access for people who have booked treatments. Nowhere in this guide takes walk-ins.
Which Liverpool spa has the best thermal suite? Hope Street Hotel, on facilities. It has a 15-metre indoor pool, an outdoor heated vitality pool, a Himalayan salt sauna, a herbal sauna, an aroma steam room and an infra-red tepidarium. Maya Blue at the Titanic has the more atmospheric setting and the larger treatment operation.
Are Liverpool hotel spas adults only? The main ones are. Maya Blue is restricted to guests aged 18 and over, and the Municipal’s pool is over 18s only. This is worth checking before booking a family visit, because leisure-club spas attached to city hotels often have separate family swim times.
What do I need to take to a Liverpool spa day? Swimwear at every venue. Hope Street provides robes, towels and slippers. Maya Blue provides a locker, towel and robe but no footwear at all, so you must bring flip flops, sliders or similar. Take a hair tie, a refillable bottle and a change of clothes if you are going out afterwards.
Is a spa night better value than a spa day in Liverpool? Often, yes. Every venue in this guide is attached to a hotel, and the stay-and-spa packages tend to bundle the thermal access, breakfast and sometimes dinner at less than the sum of a day package plus a separate room. It also solves the access problem at Maya Blue, since residents get their own morning and evening thermal slots.
How far in advance should I book? For a Friday or Saturday, several weeks. Liverpool’s thermal suites are small relative to demand, treatment rooms are the bottleneck, and the venues that restrict daytime access to treatment bookings effectively cap how many people can be in the water at once. Midweek mornings are the easiest slots to get.
